Steffen Peters was born in Germany, where he started riding at age seven, quickly moving on to competing internationally, mainly in Belgium and Denmark, at age 15. Although he competed all around the world it is safe to say that his heart was set on the United States! After training in the states during the summer of 1984 he returned to the United States with his first horse Udon not even a year later. Udon and Peters competed in their first ever Olympics together, earning a bronze medal in the 1996 Summer Olympics. Ever since then Peters has competed in five Olympic Games as well as numerous World Championships and Pan American Games. Peters is the first person to be awarded the USEF's Equestrian of the Year Award three times, having won the honor in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Nowadays Steffen and his wife, well known dressage-rider Shannon Peters run their training business, SPeters Dressage, in San Diego, CA.
