History echoed and glory repeated as Ros Canter and the remarkable Lordships Graffalo claimed victory at the 2025 MARS Badminton Horse Trials, cementing their place as one of the sport’s all-time great pairings.
With this win, Canter led a podium that mirrored 2023’s finish, joined once again by Oliver Townend and Austin O’Connor—each delivering performances worthy of the iconic event’s legacy.
The final day was rife with tension before a single rail had even fallen. In a dramatic morning twist, Oliver Townend made the strategic decision to withdraw Ballaghmor Class after presenting him to the ground jury. Reigning World Champion Yasmin Ingham also bowed out, withdrawing Rehy DJ, which opened the door for new challengers to enter the top 10—including Emily King with Valmy Biats.
Kevin Bywater’s show jumping course challenged the 54 returning combinations, with only five going clear. Time faults piled up, and early trouble at the towering oxer by the Members Enclosure, a deceiving water tray at fence 5, and the final treble combination proved to be dream-breakers for many.
With just two riders remaining, Townend and Cooley Rosalent entered the arena with a razor-thin lead. The crowd's excitement had to be hushed as the sensitive mare took to the course. A heartbreaking rail at fence 10 dashed their shot at the title and left the door open for Canter.
Last to go, Ros Canter and Lordships Graffalo rode with poise, strength, and trust—despite having no room for error. Under immense pressure, the duo produced a polished round, sealing the win and bringing the crowd to its feet in celebration.
Lordships Graffalo now boasts two Badminton titles, an Olympic gold medal, a European Championship title, and a Burghley win. With time on their side, Canter and her superstar gelding may have their sights set on matching—and possibly surpassing—the record of three Badminton wins, a feat achieved only once in the storied history of this event.
In every way, Lordships Graffalo is proving to be a horse for the ages, and Ros Canter continues to define what it means to be at the pinnacle of eventing.
