The equestrian disciplines of jumping, dressage, and eventing will continue to be part of the Olympic Games, as confirmed for LA28 in Los Angeles.
This decision, made by the Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), maintains the existing framework with six medal events: one individual and one team competition for each discipline.
The allocation of starting places remains unchanged, with 75 spots in jumping, 60 in dressage, and 65 in eventing, totaling 200, the same as for the 2024 Games in Paris.
FEI President Ingmar De Vos expressed satisfaction with the IOC's decision following a successful showing for equestrian sports at the 2024 Olympics, noting high attendance and strong media reach.
The qualification systems for LA28 were discussed at the recent FEI Sports Forum, attended by Elisabeth Max-Theurer, President of the Austrian Equestrian Federation. Proposals will be submitted for approval at the FEI General Assembly in 2025 before being forwarded to the IOC for final decision.
Equestrian sports will feature among the 31 sports at LA28, contributing three disciplines to the 25 mixed events in the overall program of 351 medal decisions. The total athlete quota remains at 10,500, with an additional 698 spots proposed for newly included sports such as baseball/softball and lacrosse.
Equestrian events at the Tokyo 2020 Games saw participation from 50 nations, a record figure. The sport retains its status as the only Olympic discipline where men and women compete equally at all levels.
The LA28 program is based on proposals from international sports federations, adhering to IOC criteria such as gender equality and global appeal. More information is available on the IOC's official website.
