Authentic, the iconic show jumper who carried Beezie Madden to two Olympic team golds and an individual bronze, has died at the age of 30. The Dutch Warmblood (Guidam x Katell), affectionately known as “Bud,” passed away peacefully at Madden Mountain in New York, where he enjoyed a long retirement.
Discovered as a 3-year-old and bought by the Maddens and Elizabeth Busch Burke at age six, Authentic quickly rose to the top. Highlights include team gold at Athens 2004 and Hong Kong 2008, silver and individual silver at the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games, and a win at the 2007 Grand Prix of Aachen. His speed, scope, and cheerful personality made him a fan favorite and a cornerstone of Madden’s career.
Authentic was twice named the Chronicle of the Horse Show Jumping Horse of the Year and left a lasting impact both in the arena and during his peaceful years in retirement as “Uncle Bud.”
