Romeo 88, the Olympic gold medallist show horse, has officially retired at the age of 16. Harry Charles, who rode the Zangersheide gelding, expressed gratitude for their time together. Romeo had a distinguished career, representing Britain at two Olympics and contributing to team gold at the previous year's games, along with a bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships. This performance secured Britain's spot in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games. His record also includes a fourth-place finish in the 2022 World Cup Final and numerous podium finishes in major competitions around the globe. Peter Charles, Harry's father, clarified that the decision to retire Romeo was made for the horse's well-being, noting that the team vet confirmed him to be in excellent health.
Harry began partnering with Romeo in 2021, leading to their Olympic debut. Despite challenges, they built a successful partnership that delighted both competitors and fans. Last year's Olympic performance was particularly impressive, as Harry competed despite sustaining a wrist injury just weeks before the event. Peter highlighted the remarkable achievement of the trio finishing in top form with no drop score, culminating in a memorable gold medal win.
