The inaugural US Equestrian Open Eventing Final concluded with a historic victory for four-time Olympian Boyd Martin and Miks Master C, who topped the leaderboard after a flawless final jumping phase at Morven Park International Equestrian Center. Their clear round in the Grand Prix Arena secured a winning three-phase score of 28.7, earning them the distinction of being the first-ever champions of this prestigious new competition.
Martin piloted the 2012 U.S.-bred Swedish Warmblood gelding to the top of the $200,000 prize pot. In addition to the championship, Martin and Miks Master C were awarded the MARS American-Bred Talent Trophy for the highest-finishing U.S.-bred horse in the CCI4*-L division.
A newer partnership, Miks Master C joined Martin’s program just over a year ago after previously being campaigned by U.S. Eventing Team athlete Liz Halliday. Martin reflected on the significance of the victory, noting the journey of building trust with the gelding following Halliday’s 2024 accident and the strong team effort behind the horse.
The win came after a thrilling cross-country phase on a challenging, technical course designed by Derek di Grazia (USA). Overnight leaders Will Coleman and his veteran mount, Off The Record, entered the final jumping round in first place on a dressage score of 25.1. A single rail at the triple combination opened the door for Martin to take the lead.
Coleman nonetheless produced an impressive showing, securing both second and third place aboard Off The Record (29.1) and Very Dignified (35.4), keeping both horses highly competitive in their CCI4*-L debut together.
For Coleman, a Virginia native, the US Equestrian Open added an extra layer of excitement to Morven Park’s historic atmosphere, elevating the competition and showcasing the sport of eventing at its very best.
