WBFSH launches welfare-driven breeding initiative
New research aims to enhance global sport horse wellbeing

The World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) has commissioned a major research project to develop science-based welfare recommendations for the global breeding industry. Representing 86 studbooks across 36 countries, the WBFSH is leveraging its international reach to promote better equine health, management, and sustainability in sport horse breeding.
Conducted by Hartpury University and led by Professor Jane M. Williams, the project produced a set of evidence-based recommendations designed to inform the WBFSH’s forthcoming Welfare Charter and Codes of Conduct. Key findings were presented at the 2024 WBFSH General Assembly, with executive summaries available in six languages.
The research followed a three-stage approach:
- Interviews with 17 WBFSH member studbooks to identify welfare priorities
- A systematic review of scientific literature focused on breeding practices and equine wellbeing
- Focus groups with industry experts and academics to refine the recommendations
Using Mellor’s Five Domains Model, the project identified three main areas of welfare concern:
- Selection of breeding stock – focusing on genetics, grading, and end-of-life decisions
- Management of breeding stock – particularly the use of artificial reproductive techniques and the care of mares and stallions
- Foal and youngstock care – including early socialisation and appropriate training
The WBFSH will now begin the implementation phase, working with member studbooks to integrate welfare guidelines into breed strategies, promote behavioural and longevity traits, and support responsible breeding through ongoing research, education, and accessible tools for breeders worldwide.
This initiative positions the WBFSH as a leading voice in the promotion of equine welfare in sport horse breeding and underlines its long-term commitment to a more sustainable and humane industry.
