Introduction of Frangible Technology Enhances Eventing Safety

Stuart Buntine, director of BEDE Events, highlights the introduction of frangible tables, a new safety technology, at the Thoresby Spring Carnival of Eventing next week.

Unlike traditional frangible fences, these tables look conventional and feature mechanisms that are only noticeable upon close inspection, with designated windows for fence judges to monitor their integrity between rounds. Buntine expresses a desire to return to classic cross-country designs while ensuring that any new construction can be frangible. The goal is to reduce risks associated with falls, particularly involving rotational incidents. Mats Björnetun, creator of MIM technology, explains that while traditional frangible pins respond to vertical impact, MIM clips can react to both vertical and horizontal forces, minimizing the likelihood of severe rotational falls that can be fatal. Since the adoption of MIM technology in 2013, statistics indicate a decline in such falls. The technology's effectiveness has prompted Buntine to explore creating various new fence designs that are both aesthetically pleasing and safer for horses and riders. These designs include unique structures like a hanging log, which is engineered to collapse under impact, reducing the overall risk during competitions.

Georgie Campbell’s foundation is advocating for safer eventing practices, reflecting on recent tragedies to push for advancements in safety technologies. With plans to review fence performances post-event, Buntine remains committed to evolving safety principles in the sport, recognizing the continuing challenge of balancing aesthetics, function, and safety in course design.
