Quarantine measures enacted after positive test in Volusia County

On March 21, a 14-year-old warmblood gelding in Volusia County, Florida, tested positive for strangles. The horse developed clinical signs on March 13, including fever, cough, and nasal discharge. Currently, the horse is under quarantine, and 11 other horses have been identified as exposed. This incident marks Florida's 11th confirmed case of strangles in the year 2025.
How it Starts
Strangles is caused by the bacteria Streptococcus equi subspecies equi, which can spread through contact with infected horses or contaminated surfaces. Horses without visible symptoms may still carry and transmit the bacteria, and those who have recovered can remain contagious for at least six weeks, risking long-term outbreaks. The clinical signs can vary among infected horses.
Treatment
Veterinarians usually diagnose the disease through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing using samples from nasal swabs, washes, or abscesses. Treatment often involves antibiotics in more severe cases. However, overuse of antibiotics may impede the development of immunity. Generally, most horses recover within three to four weeks. A vaccine is available, but its effectiveness is not guaranteed. Implementing biosecurity measures, such as quarantining new arrivals and maintaining hygiene standards, can help mitigate the risk of outbreaks.
