Irish Show Jumpers Achieve Success at Winter Equestrian Festival
Numerous podium finishes mark a strong week for Irish athletes

Nicky Galligan emerged as a notable winner at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, showcasing exceptional talent in a four-star speed class. The athlete, based in New York, clocked in at 61.9 seconds on VDL Nikita van de Leeuwerk, narrowly surpassing the previous target of 62.23 seconds set by Nayel Nassar from Egypt. Galligan expressed pride in his horse and the supportive team surrounding him after the victory. Other Irish performers also excelled, with Jordan Coyle finishing third with For Gold in the same event and later earning a second-place finish in the $150,000 Hermès Classic Series Final. In the latter, Coyle and For Gold placed second behind Alex Matz of the USA, who won with a time of 35.31 seconds. Coyle's consistent performance included a close contest in the four-star WEF Challenge Round as well.
Additionally, Cormac Hanley entered the top ranks with a third-place finish in a 1.45m jump-off competition at Wellington, demonstrating strong Irish representation across various classes. Cian O’Connor secured second place in the 1.60m Lugano Grand Prix while contributing to Ireland's fourth-place finish in the Nations Cup. Other noteworthy finishes from Daniel Coyle and Janika Sprunger continue to enhance the Irish presence in show jumping. Jessica Burke also shone in the Andalucía Sunshine Tour, securing a bronze medal and additional high placements in various events. The performances underscore the competitive spirit of the Irish riders on the global show jumping stage, with several podium finishes reflecting their commitment and expertise.
