Florida Gelding Tests Positive for Strangles
Official quarantine measures implemented following confirmed case

A Quarter Horse gelding in Polk County, Florida, tested positive for strangles after showing clinical signs on March 27. The gelding is currently under official quarantine, with one additional horse identified as exposed. This marks Florida's 12th confirmed case of strangles in 2025. Strangles is an infection caused by the bacterium Streptococcus equi subspecies equi, which spreads through direct contact with infected horses or contaminated surfaces. Horses displaying no clinical signs may still carry and transmit the bacteria, and recovered horses can remain contagious for a minimum of six weeks, posing a risk for long-term outbreaks.
Veterinarians utilize polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for diagnosis, often relying on nasal swabs or abscess samples. Treatment typically involves managing clinical signs, with antibiotics reserved for severe cases. While most infected horses recover fully within three to four weeks, the effective use of antibiotics is crucial to allow for immunity development. A vaccine exists but is not consistently effective.
To mitigate outbreak risks, biosecurity protocols such as quarantining new arrivals and maintaining strict hygiene standards are recommended. This information is part of the EDCC Health Watch program, which delivers verified reports on equine diseases. The EDCC operates as an independent nonprofit organization, funded by industry donations to ensure open access to critical infectious disease information.
