Julien Epaillard of France achieved significant success by winning the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ 2025 Final in Basel, Switzerland, riding his 12-year-old gelding, Donatello d’Auge. This victory follows their win in the Longines FEI World Cup™ qualifier in January.
Epaillard dominated the challenging competition at St. Jakobshalle, maintaining an early lead after winning the opening day's speed class. He strategically opted not to participate in a jump-off on day two to conserve his horse's energy, a decision that proved successful as they secured the title with a crucial clear round. Epaillard noted that Donatello d’Auge showed signs of fatigue during the initial round but was still able to perform excellently. As the competition progressed, he maintained a three-fault advantage over his competitors, which included fellow countryman Kevin Staut, Ben Maher from Great Britain, and Lillie Keenan from the United States.
Only four of the 20 competitors in the final round managed to jump clear, and the pressure affected several leading athletes. Keenan's hopes for a podium finish diminished due to three faults during her round. Staut and Maher also ended with four faults, allowing Epaillard to maintain his advantageous position. As the spectators held their breath, Epaillard skillfully guided Donatello d’Auge over the last two obstacles without incurring further faults, successfully claiming his first World Cup title and marking France's first championship win in 21 years. Following the victory, Epaillard reflected on his performance with humility, emphasizing the teamwork behind his success. Maher expressed disappointment but acknowledged the superb performance of his horse. Staut celebrated his own podium finish, highlighting the great atmosphere and high standards of competition present at the event, while praising the facilities and welfare measures provided. The event's course designer, Gérard Lachat, received compliments for his well-constructed courses that tested the athletes appropriately.
Epaillard concluded by sharing his joy for the competition and hinting at the possibility of returning to Basel in the future.
