The U.S. Equestrian Federation, along with the U.S. Eventing Association, has introduced a new national review process aimed at innovative frangible cross-country jump designs. This initiative seeks to enhance the assessment and potential implementation of frangible devices at the national level in the U.S.
The newly established process will allow for the evaluation of frangible device concepts to ensure they meet minimum performance standards set by the Fédération Equestre Internationale. Notably, this national process will not require devices to adhere to FEI's mass production provisions, thus allowing room for unique and small-scale innovations. The objective behind this framework is to foster domestic innovation by enabling designers, engineers, builders, and organizers to introduce and validate frangible technology suitable for national competitions.
Previously, approval was granted only through the FEI for international use. With this new structure, there is an opportunity for timely review and potential approval for U.S. national events. Amber Braun, the Managing Director for Eventing at the USEF, expressed optimism about the initiative, stating that minimizing risks for athletes and horses is a primary concern for both organizations.
Applications for device reviews will be accepted via a submission link on the USEF website. Rusty Lowe, the vice president of safety at USEA, highlighted the importance of frangible technology, noting its proven record in reducing injuries and fatalities in the sport. The USEF/USEA National Frangible Device Review Committee will include various members such as Marc Grandia, Dr. Kaitlin Spak, and course builder Tyson Rementer, who are all experienced in equestrian safety and competition.
