A talented field of professional riders took center stage in the R+L Arena at World Equestrian Center – Wilmington (WEC) for the $10,000 Shoofly USHJA National Open Hunter Derby during Midwest Indoors I. The competition was fierce, with scores soaring into the 90s and riders delivering rounds that showcased style, precision, and rhythm.

It was Samantha Cooper and her longtime partner, Nandino, who ultimately stole the show. The pair’s partnership spans an impressive 14 years, and their connection was evident as they navigated both rounds with poise and confidence.

In the first round, Cooper and the 18-year-old Brandenburg Warmblood gelding, owned by Ellen Malson, impressed the judges for a score of 88, placing them in third heading into the handy round. Returning determined to top the leaderboard, Cooper guided Nandino to a fluid and expressive handy trip, earning a remarkable score of 93. Their two-round total of 181 secured the top spot and the well-deserved victory.

The class featured beautifully presented courses and showcased the exceptional quality of the hunters in attendance, marking another memorable highlight of the Midwest Indoors I series at WEC – Wilmington.
