A memorial service commemorating dressage rider and national team coach Jonny Hilberath took place on 24 March 2025 in the show jumping hall of the German Equestrian Olympic Committee (DOKR).
Approximately 300 attendees, including friends, riders, fellow trainers, and associates from across Germany, came together to remember Hilberath.
DOKR Managing Director Dr. Dennis Peiler opened the service by reflecting on Hilberath's journey from humble beginnings to becoming a respected figure in the equestrian world. Peiler described him as a devoted horseman who maintained a humble demeanor despite numerous achievements, including coaching at five Olympic Games.
Monica Theodorescu, the current national team trainer, highlighted Jonny's dedication and positive influence on riders. She shared memories of their collaborative experiences and the strong trust between them. Olympic champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl also remembered Hilberath fondly, emphasizing his valuable life lessons, including the importance of genuine friendship.
Team veterinarian Dr. Marc Koene delivered the final speech, expressing gratitude on behalf of Hilberath's partner, Annika, for the support received after his passing. The service featured performances by jazz and soul musicians Gregory Porter and Nora Jones, concluding with attendees rising in tribute to Jonny Hilberath before saying their final goodbyes.
