Santa Anita Park has been confirmed as the location for the equestrian events of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
FEI President Ingmar De Vos expressed excitement about the venue, recalling its previous hosting of equestrian events during the 1984 Olympic Games. The park is expected to provide a stunning setting for all equestrian competitions, being conveniently located near downtown Los Angeles, which is anticipated to draw large crowds. IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell acknowledged the collaboration with the FEI and Los Angeles Organising Committee, emphasizing the support from the local equestrian community. Bill Moroney, Chief Executive Officer of US Equestrian, expressed confidence in the organizing committee and noted that the athlete quotas for equestrian sports will remain the same as in 2024.
Santa Anita Park features an on-site veterinary clinic and has hosted significant Thoroughbred racing events, including the Breeders Cup. The venue is historically notable for being the final race location of the famous racehorse Seabiscuit in 1940. The park spans 130 hectares and includes a grandstand capable of seating 26,000 spectators, with an infield area that can hold up to 50,000 people. The venue also has 61 barns prepared to accommodate over 2,000 horses. Information on the venue for the Para Equestrian events will be confirmed after approval from the International Paralympic Committee.
This announcement comes as a surprise as Galway Downs and Temecula Park had previously been informed that they would be the hosts of the equestrian disciplines.
The LA28 Olympic Games are scheduled for 14 to 30 July 2028, with the Paralympics following from 15 to 27 August 2028.
