Longtime Equestrian Enthusiast Marlene Edwards Passes Away

Owner of renowned showjumper Flying Tinker II leaves behind a lasting legacy

June 29, 2025 at 4:55 PMBy b.wehner

Marlene Edwards, a dedicated horsewoman and owner of the acclaimed showjumper Flying Tinker II, has passed away at the age of 93. Her life was marked by passion, commitment, and a deep love for horses. Born in 1932 in Cwmgors, South Wales, Marlene developed an affinity for animals early on. Initially working in BP's accounts department, her life changed significantly after marrying Roy Edwards, a successful businessman. Marlene left her career to support Roy in his thriving building company, but their mutual passion for horses became the cornerstone of their life together. Together, they bred and produced numerous successful showjumping horses.

Their notable achievements included impressive performances from horses like Perth and Zermis, who competed at prestigious events such as the Horse of the Year Show and Hickstead. However, it was the stallion Flying Tinker II that became their crowning achievement. Acquired more recently, Flying Tinker II, under the training of Mark Edwards, achieved remarkable success, culminating in winning the Showjumping Horse of the Year title at the H&H Awards in 2024.

A highlight of his career included receiving a spot on the British show jumping team, which brought Marlene great pride. Those who had the pleasure to know Marlene remember her dedication to equestrian sports, her quiet strength, and the joy she derived from the success of the horses in her care.
