Braitling and Caravaggio II triumph in Temecula

Christian Kukuk wasn’t the only one celebrating a major win this weekend. Bec Braitling (AUS) and Caravaggio II claimed victory in the CCI4*-S at the International Horse Trials in Temecula, California. With the fastest cross-country time of the day, the pair moved up from fourth to first, finishing ahead of Tommy Greengard (USA) with That’s Me Z and Megan McIver (USA) aboard Igor B.

Braitling used the outing as preparation for a planned return to the Defender Kentucky CCI5*-L next month. Despite 13.2 time penalties, her round was the fastest in the division. The pair scored 30.4 in dressage and had one rail down in show jumping before delivering a bold cross-country performance.

Greengard’s That’s Me Z, an 8-year-old Zangersheide gelding, impressed in his first-ever Advanced competition. He remained consistent across all three phases to finish second. McIver and Igor B confirmed their growing form. With support from coach Eric Duvander, their 30.8 dressage score laid a strong foundation for a clear and confident finish.

Tamie Smith and Kynan, leaders after dressage and show jumping, opted for a steady pace in the final phase, ultimately finishing fifth. Karen O’Neal (USA) and Clooney 14 were on track for a possible win but dropped down the leaderboard after a run-out at the coffin combination late on course.

In the CCI3*-S, Tamie Smith took the win with Lillet 3. The pair were the only combination to finish double clear across country. Greengard secured second place with Balladeer Kilbrickens Lad, a 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse who has made significant progress after arriving at the stable less than a year ago. Erin Kellerhouse and Bon Vivant GWF held onto third, continuing their successful return to the level after a fall last season.

Smith also topped the CCI2*-S with a one-two finish. Kareena K and Solaguayre Cantata both finished on their dressage scores to take first and second place respectively. Anni Grandia-Dodson (USA) and Mistral moved up to third in their season debut, also finishing on their dressage mark.

In the CCI1*-S, Kaylawna Smith-Cook (USA) and Coco Chanel completed the weekend on their dressage score of 31.5 to take the win. The 7-year-old Holsteiner mare, new to her string, delivered a strong and steady cross-country performance. Asia Vedder and Litmanen Z placed second, with Megan McIver and Storm Dino in third ahead of the final phase.

The International Horse Trials concluded Saturday for international divisions, with Starter through Open Training national divisions finishing on Sunday. The atmosphere was full of energy and community spirit, with pony riders, seasoned athletes, and enthusiastic supporters all sharing a love of eventing and horses.
