Florida Mare Tests Positive for Strangles
Clinical signs prompt quarantine and monitoring of additional horses

On April 12th, a 4-year-old mare in Clay County, Florida, tested positive for strangles, a bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus equi subspecies equi. The mare displayed clinical symptoms including fever, abscess, and nasal discharge a day prior, leading to her being placed under official quarantine. Three other horses that were exposed to her are also being monitored. Strangles is known to spread through direct contact with infected horses or contaminated surfaces. It is important to note that horses can harbor the bacteria without showing symptoms, and those that recover can remain contagious for at least six weeks.
Diagnosis
Diagnosing strangles typically involves polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing using samples from nasal swabs or abscesses, with treatment primarily based on clinical signs, including antibiotics for severe cases. Overuse of antibiotics can hinder the development of immunity in infected horses. Most recover within three to four weeks, although a vaccine exists, its efficacy can vary.
Prevention
To reduce the likelihood of outbreaks, biosecurity measures, including quarantining new horses and maintaining high hygiene standards, are essential. This situation has been reported through the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC), which provides verified updates on equine health issues as part of a marketing initiative. The EDCC is a nonprofit organization supported by donations from the equine industry.
