Restrictions eased for Russian and Belarusian athletes at FEI events

An important decision was made at the General Assembly of the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) in Hong Kong: As of January 1, 2026, athletes from Russia and Belarus will once again be allowed to participate in FEI competitions under a neutral flag. This relaxation follows a new approach by the International Federations and the Paralympic Movement.

Participation under a neutral flag from 2026

The decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in FEI events affects both individual and team competitions. However, these athletes must compete under a neutral flag. The relaxation was decided after a comprehensive review of the situation by the FEI Executive Board, which revised the measures due to the changed international political and sporting environment.

Re-admission to the FEI and impact on Belarus

From 2026, it will also be possible to organize FEI events in Belarus, which will actively involve the Belarusian Equestrian Federation in international competitions again. The verification of the neutrality of athletes will be carried out by the national federations, with appeals being examined by the FEI. The decision to return Russian and Belarusian riders follows the measures taken after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, when Russian and Belarusian athletes were banned from international competitions.
