Six Horses Test Positive for Strangles in New York

Six horses at a boarding facility in Erie County, New York, have recently tested positive for strangles, with a further case suspected.

A total of 27 horses have been identified as exposed to the infection, and the affected horses are currently under official quarantine. This information has been disseminated through EDCC Health Watch, a program that leverages data from the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC). The EDCC is a nonprofit organization that provides access to information about equine infectious diseases, supported by donations from the equine industry.

Strangles is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus equi subspecies equi and is transmitted through direct contact with infected horses or contaminated surfaces. Horses without visible signs of illness can still carry and transmit the bacteria, making biosecurity a crucial aspect of disease management. Infected horses may show various symptoms, and veterinarians typically diagnose the condition with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. Treatment generally involves antibiotics in severe cases, but excessive use can hinder the development of immunity. The majority of infected horses recover within three to four weeks, and while a vaccine exists, its efficacy is variable.

Maintaining high hygiene standards and quarantining new arrivals at facilities is essential to reduce the risk of outbreaks.
