Two horses in King County, Washington, have recently tested positive for equine influenza and are currently under veterinary care. This highly contagious respiratory disease affects horses, ponies, and other equids including donkeys and zebras. The virus spreads through saliva and respiratory secretions, with horses being exposed via direct contact, aerosol transmission from coughing, or through contaminated equipment.
Symptoms
Symptoms can include high fever, dry cough, weakness, and nasal discharge. It is advisable for horse owners to monitor their horses’ health by taking their temperatures regularly, especially during events. Vaccination is emphasized as a crucial preventive measure. The US Equestrian requires proof of vaccination against equine influenza for horses participating in competitions within six months of the event. Veterinarians can provide guidance on additional vaccines that may be beneficial for individual horses.
Prevention
To further curb the spread of infection, strict biosecurity protocols should be observed, including quarantining new arrivals and regularly disinfecting equipment. This information is supported by the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC), a nonprofit organization that offers reliable updates on equine health issues.
