Molly Ashe Cawley Ekes out a Grand Prix Qualifier Win at WEC Ocala

Molly Ashe Cawley and her longtime partner, Berdien, a 15-year-old Zangersheide mare, crossed the timers six hundredths of a second faster than the runner-up to take the CSI2* $32,000 Grand Prix Qualifier at the World Equestrian Center (WEC) in Ocala on Friday.

Rounding out the top three

Second-place finisher Samuel Parot of Chile, aboard a mount new to him, Gradje O, a 15-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, took second place by 0.54 seconds ahead of third.Parot and Gradje O were also second in Thursday's CSI2* Speed class.

Jad Dana of Lebanon, with the 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Leonidas, was third in the 1.45-meter class, just 0.25 seconds ahead of fourth place.

Dana had a quicker time with Jetplane, 37.87, but a knockdown for four faults kept them out of the money in 14th place.

Jump-off times were close through seventh place

Though the closest times were between first and second place, another battle with the timers took place between Aaron Vale and Francis Derwin. Vale and Chutter Du Rouet Ps went a few trips before Derwin and Gospel Tame, and ended up edging out Derwin for fourth place by 0.09 seconds.

Then all eyes were on Ireland's Daniel Coyle and Urville Z, who built an impressive résumé in just their first few weeks together, and were last to go in the jump-off. They delivered the fastest time, more than two seconds faster than the winner; however, rails down at the penultimate fence cost them four faults, and they finished in 13th place.

In the field of 44, 16 qualified for the jump-off, where 12 were double clear.
