Historic Win for Belgium
Belgium's Justin Verboomen, 37, emerged victorious in the 5* Grand Prix Special at the 2025 CDIO Aachen held on July 5, 2025. In a press conference following his win, Verboomen expressed his disbelief and excitement, emphasizing the bond he shares with his horse, Zonik Plus, a nine-year-old Hanoverian stallion bred in Portugal.
Impressive Test Performance
The pair's performance in Aachen marked only their second Grand Prix Special test, where they achieved an outstanding score of 80.745%. This result placed them ahead of notable competitors, including seven-time Olympian Isabell Werth.
Throughout the performance, the duo maintained a strong connection, exhibiting light-footed trots and impressive passage. However, areas for improvement include the horse's engagement and extension in certain movements, which Verboomen acknowledged as future goals for development.
Judging and Competition Highlights
The judging panel, featuring established judges, scored Verboomen's test favorably, with three ranking him first and two second. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Belgium, recognizing Verboomen's contribution to the sport in a landscape traditionally dominated by German riders.
Despite Werth's strong history of success, she remained positive about the competitive environment, stating that such challenges motivate her to continue striving for excellence. The third position was secured by British rider Becky Moody with her horse, Jagerbomb, who also celebrated a personal best.
Looking Ahead
The 2025 CDIO Aachen will conclude with the Kur to Music, promising an exciting atmosphere filled with both competitors and spectators. As anticipation builds for the final event, the outstanding performances thus far have set a high standard for the sport.
