Irish show jumper Bertram Allen was arrested on the evening of January 13, 2026, in West Palm Beach, Florida. According to horsenetwork.com, the 30-year-old is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing a rear-end collision. The police arrested him at the scene of the accident.
Allen is in the area competing at Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington.
Breath test with significant blood alcohol level
According to the D.U.I. Probable Cause Affidavit from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Allen was stopped by officers at 10:04 p.m. at the Southern Boulevard Turnpike entrance. He reportedly drove his vehicle into the back of a stopped car as he was coming from the Okeechobee Steakhouse. According to details in the Affidavit, the arresting officer noticed signs of alcohol consumption, including slurred speech, glassy and watery eyes, the smell of alcohol, and unsteady balance. Allen was administered a standardized roadside sobriety test at the scene of the accident and subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with property damage. Two breath samples conducted at the Breath Alcohol Testing Center showed blood alcohol levels of 0.228 and 0.242 percent. In Florida, the legal limit is 0.08 percent for people aged 21 and over. According to the police report, no injuries were reported.
Allen has retained a lawyer, who, on behalf of Allen, filed a written plea of not guilty and requested a trial by a jury of his peers.
