Pro Tips:  Hoof Pack with Dr. Sarah Escaro

Dr. Sarah Escaro shows us the correct way to place a basic hoof pack on your horse. Hoof packing is a routine part of equine care and can be beneficial for horses in various situations. It can help protect and stabilize the hoof, promote healing, and prevent further damage in cases of hoof injuries such as cuts, abscesses, or laminitis. Additionally, it can be used to safeguard the hoof during the application of fresh horseshoes, reducing the risk of damage and supporting the healing process. Horses with certain hoof conditions like hoof ulcers or thrush can also benefit from a hoof bandage as it can provide protection, prevent the spread of infection, and aid in healing. Moreover, a hoof bandage can offer additional support and stabilization to horses with hoof issues such as navicular syndrome or hoof rotation, reducing strain on the affected hoof.

A graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University, Dr. Escaro originally joined the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute team as a surgery intern in 2019 until 2020. In January 2022, she rejoined the practice under the surgery department and now works as a performance horse vet. Her responsibilities include diagnosing and managing lameness in sport horses of various disciplines, image acquisition and pre-purchase examinations for the thoroughbred sales, and occasional racetrack work.  To learn more about the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute visit hagyard.com
