(Neumünster) When traditional meets modern and the top sport meets the best of breeding – then the Trakehner Stallion Market opens its doors! This year the noble East Prussians will be in the time-honoured Holsten Halls from the 18th to the 21st of October. That is when the best stallions of the group will be approved and will be sold off in three very special auctions.
The excitement continues to rise since the approval committee was underway in August to examine the two-and-a-half-year-old stallions, elite riding horses, hopeful broodmares and select foals throughout Germany, and now – following the last x-ray and vet check - the collection for the 56th Trakehner Stallion Market is complete.
39 young stallions will be presented to the approval committee in October. They are sired by 22 stallions. „Millenium has the highest representation with six sons“, summarized Lars Gehrmann, the breed manager, “but there are also many other highly interesting bloodlines.” The pitch-black top athlete Schwarzgold, by Imperio, is sending four sons to the elite approval event, and the stallion performance test reserve champion, Ivanhoe, premium stallion Honoré du Soir and the Trakehner champion stallion 2014, Sir Sansibar, are each sending three sons. “Beyond that, we have a very nice riding horse approval lot this year with five quality stallions”, said Gehrmann.
Traditionally, the elite members of the riding horses, broodmares and foals are also auctioned off during the Trakehner Stallion Market. The majority of the broodmares are already in foal and have been awarded the association and national premium status. Almost all of the 14 selected riding horses have placed in the sport and there are also three eventing orientated talents in the group. The youngest lot is comprised of 18 top foals with modern and athletic pedigrees, who show magnificent promise with their type, confirmation and quality of movement. There will also be, as in last year, an embryo as part of the auction – it is a full brother or sister to Freiherr von Stein, the bronze medal winner of the 4-year-old stallions from the German Championships 2017.
However, the Trakehner Stallion Market is so much more than just a breeding jewel in the hippological calendar. It offers an extensive supporting programme, inspires thousands of guests with the Gala Show on Saturday evening and offers sport accents with the Trakehner Free-Jumping Cup on Friday morning and the TSF Dressage Championat Final on Sunday morning.
The Friday evening offers an exclusive event highlight – the organizers have managed to secure Anja Beran: The trainer will be coming to the Holsten Halls with her multimedia lecture “Training the Eye - recognising training which is appropriate to the requirements of the horse” that has been so well received by professionals in the equestrian community.

The Trakehner Stallion Market is considered, worldwide, to be the prettiest and most atmospheric approval event. Besides the approvals for the young stallions, two elite auctions offer the chance to purchase first class young Trakehners. The auction lots encompass the approved and unapproved stallions, top class mares for breeding and sport, a selection of the best foals from 2018 and first-class young riding horses. The Trakehner Gala Show on Saturday evening is legendary and the extensive supporting programme offers entertainment and education around breeding and sport.
