A Grand Farewell to a True Champion: Vital Chance de La Roque Retires

Conor Swail has officially retired one of his most trusted and beloved partners, Vital Chance de La Roque. Affectionately known as “Vinny,” the 2009 Selle Français gelding by Diamant de Semilly out of a Rivage du Poncel dam line has delivered countless unforgettable performances on the international show jumping stage. Born on May 16, 2009, Vinny’s athleticism, courage, and heart have made him a standout in 1.50m to 1.60m competition, while his sire Diamant de Semilly continues to be celebrated for producing top-tier performers.

A Career of Consistent Excellence

Vinny’s partnership with Swail produced an impressive record of victories and podiums at some of the sport’s most prestigious events:

  • Winner of the $228,000 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Sacramento, where the pair delivered a flawless, high-pressure performance on the world stage.
  • Winner of the $32,000 Welcome Stake CSI2* at the Blenheim Spring Classic, demonstrating speed and precision over a challenging course.
  • Top placings in the $32,000 San Marcos Training Classic CSI4* at Desert International Horse Park, dominating the grass field with confidence.
  • Victory in the $25,000 FarmVet 1.45m Open Classic during the Desert Circuit, showcasing consistency and technical skill.
  • Champion of the $138,600 Sun Air Jets 1.55m Grand Prix CSI3* at Desert Circuit, mastering a demanding course with poise.
  • Multiple grand prix wins at venues including Tryon International Equestrian Center, such as the $73,000 Cleghorn Gun Club GP and the $139,000 Cleghorn Golf & Sports Club Grand Prix CSI3*.
  • Podium finish at the 2024 Washington International Horse Show Welcome Stake, proving longevity and competitiveness into his teens.

and more!

Over the years, Swail and Vinny became a feared and beloved combination in 1.50m and 1.55m classes, admired for their careful technique, lightning-fast rounds, and unshakeable trust. Their partnership, spanning continents and seasons, exemplified both equine talent and masterful horsemanship.

More Than Just a Record

Beyond results, Vital Chance de La Roque was known for his charisma and love of the sport. Swail often noted Vinny’s playful energy, enjoyment of grass arenas, and the joy he brought to every ring. From celebratory antics after a clear round to greeting fans in the barn aisles, Vinny’s personality made him a favorite among competitors and spectators alike.

In a statement on his official instagram page, Conor Swail noted, " There's something to be said about sitting on a horse who can read your mind before every turn, run back quicker than I ask, and has the same drive to win as I do."

He then continued on to say, "Vinny was a key factor in bringing me to number 4 in the world with his 58 podium finishes- 10 being FEI Grand Prix wins."

A Retirement Well Earned

As Vinny begins his retirement, the equestrian world celebrates a life of excellence and dedication. May his days ahead be filled with lush pastures, gentle rides, and the quiet satisfaction of a career that inspired countless fans and fellow riders.

Thank you, Vital Chance de La Roque—for every jump cleared, every thrilled crowd, and every unforgettable moment—you’ll forever remain a champion in the hearts of all who witnessed your greatness.
