From Sore to Stellar: Preventing Over-Acidification in Horses

Hard training and irregular work take their toll on a horse’s body. Muscles acidify and become stiff. Most often, the culprit is identified as lactic acid, or lactate. When there is an insufficient supply of oxygen to aid in the "burning" of fuel for energy, lactate is produced. During intense exercise that relies on anaerobic metabolism, significant amounts of lactate are typically generated. Dr. Patricia Spitzenstock explains, which nutrients aid in preventing muscle over-acidification and how we can help our horses avoid muscle fatigue and discomfort.
