Eventing 101: Cross Country

The cross-country phase of eventing asks horse-and-athlete combinations to complete a course that includes a variety of obstacles on varied terrain appropriate for the level, including ditches, banks, water, and hills. Eventing athlete Mia Farley explains the basics of preparing for and competing in cross-country.

 

About the Expert:

Mia Farley is an Eventing athlete based in Lexington, Ky. For the past ten years Mia has been part of the USEF Eventing Development Programs and has had many successes. 2019 was an especially strong year where she placed in the top 15 in eight of the 12 FEI competitions she entered. In 2023, Mia and Phelps, owned by David O'Connor, completed their first CCI5*-L with a top five finish at the Maryland 5 Star and were the only pair to complete the cross-country double clear. They followed up their 5* debut with a second double-clear at the 2024 Defender Kentucky Three Day Event CCI5*-L and a top 15 finish. To end the 2024 season, the pair completed the 2024 Defender Burghley Horse Trials CCI5*-L gaining valuable experience to lead them into 2025.

• Twenty top 5 FEI finishes

• 2023 Maryland CCI5*-L top 5 finish

• 2019 Reserve Champion at the Nations Championship CCI4*-L

• 2016 NAJYRC team bronze medal and individual 6th
