Dr. Duncan F. Peters discusses lunging and how it can be effectively used for horses to exercise and release energy before a competition. Safety and control are paramount for lunger and horse, so lunging should occur in controlled areas with safe footing. Lunging time varies between horses, but lunging should not be used to exhaust a horse. Lungers should also be conscious of the horses’ movement and the size of their lunging circle to minimize slips, falls, and muscle strains.
