Introducing your horse to lateral work

Introducing your horse to lateral work

Contrary to popular belief, bending and flexion is not the first step to a supple and flexible horse. First horse and rider should be able to maintain a steady and clear rhythm, as well as the balance and the impulsion. Once those are established we can ask for flexion and bending. This is the key to a good half pass.

Judge and Trainer Christoph Hess works with Jacky and her mare Raida, who still struggles to find a good connection as well as a good rhythm and balance. Their challenge today is helping the mare find her own balance using lateral movements. Christoph’s Advice: Start the lateral work with leg yields in their best gait.
