Cross-Country Thrills Shake Up the Leaderboard

Mars Badminton Horse Trials

11 May 2025 at 10:32 amBy b.wehner

Under clear skies and electric anticipation, the Mars Badminton Horse Trials delivered a spectacular cross-country day, filled with high-stakes drama, technical brilliance, and heart-stopping reviews that reshaped the leaderboard.

As riders tackled Eric Winter’s bold course—now in his eighth year designing for Badminton—the phase lived up to its reputation for challenge and change.

From 79 starters, 44 pairs crossed the finish line clear, while six made the time—matching the highest number since Winter took the reins in 2017. The fast going provided the perfect backdrop for bold galloping efforts, while controversial flag penalties added another layer of suspense.

The most dramatic moments came with the top contenders. Oliver Townend, already a Badminton winner, retook his dressage lead with Cooley Rosalent, after a brief slip down the standings due to an initial flag penalty at Huntsman’s Close.

Once reviewed and dismissed by the ground jury, Townend’s lead was restored. The 11-year-old grey mare finished just three seconds over the optimum time, collecting 1.2 time penalties to lead on 22.3 penalties.

Townend’s path to the top was cleared when Tom McEwen, second after dressage, was knocked down the order after triggering a frangible device and picking up time faults with JL Dublin.

That opened the door for Ros Canter, whose brilliant clear inside the time aboard Lordships Graffalo had her briefly atop the standings—until her own flag penalty at the same Huntsman’s Close complex was also reviewed and dismissed. She now sits a close second on 25.3. Gemma Stevens moved into third with a gutsy round on Chilli Knight, collecting 29.5 penalties.

Current Top 5 After Cross-Country:

  1. Oliver Townend / Cooley Rosalent – 22.3
  2. Ros Canter / Lordships Graffalo – 25.3
  3. Gemma Stevens / Chilli Knight – 29.5
  4. Austin O’Connor / Colorado Blue – 30.8
  5. Harry Meade / Superstition – 31.8

With just 12 penalty points separating the top ten, Sunday’s show jumping finale is poised for a fierce showdown. Will Townend reclaim the title? Can Canter or Stevens pull off a come-from-behind win?
