Retraining of Racehorses Initiates Wider Registration for Thoroughbreds

All thoroughbreds bred for racing and based in Britain are now eligible to be registered with the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), as the industry aims to enhance equine traceability. Previously, registration was limited to horses that had either raced or trained with licensed trainers. RoR managing director David Catlow emphasized the importance of ensuring that every thoroughbred, regardless of upbringing, receives appropriate care after leaving the racing world.

This initiative aligns with RoR's strategic goals for 2024-2026. To qualify, horses must have an official racing passport, typically from Weatherbys or a recognized racing authority. Those registering under the new criteria will receive membership numbers beginning with 'NT', indicating they have not participated in training. While eligibility for RoR's competitions remains restricted to horses that have been in training, the charity stated it would review this policy as it assesses the new registration impact.

=By improving traceability, RoR aims to offer necessary support and respond to welfare concerns regarding former racehorses, showcasing the racing industry's commitment to animal care.
