Olympic Games in Los Angeles
Galway Downs has been designated as the venue for equestrian competitions during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games. This decision followed a vote by a Los Angeles City Council committee to approve changes to the selection of event locations. The choice to host equestrian events at this facility in Temecula, California was formally made in June 2024.
The Facility
This move aligns with guidelines from the International Olympic Committee which aims for the use of existing venues and centralized locations for equestrian sports, steering clear of remote sites as seen during the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. Previously, the LA28 Planning Committee had planned to hold equestrian and para-equestrian events at the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area in Encino, California, a site lacking equestrian infrastructure. In contrast, Galway Downs spans 240 acres and is situated approximately 85 miles from Los Angeles. It features a cross-country course that meets advanced level standards and regularly hosts various equestrian disciplines such as dressage, hunter/jumper, and eventing among other horse-related events.
