You are looking for a potential stallion candidate, a top brood mare to-be or a highly promising future sport horse? Then you should travel to Holstein on the second weekend in September, or, to be exact, to Behrendorf on 9 September and to Elmshorn on 10 September, when the Holsteiner foals take centre stage in the land between the seas. It‘s auction time!
46 foals have been accepted to Behrendorf, where breeders from the breeding districts North Friesland and Schleswig-Flensburg exhibit their foals for sale. Dieter Feddersen, chairman of the breeding district North Friesland is thrilled as “we have seen an excellent crop of foals this year“. The Holsteiner breed’s best-known icon, the stallion Casall, will be represented by offspring at Behrendorf, same as his sons Casaltino and Cascadello I. But also younger and emerging stallions used in the Holsteiner breeding programme like for example Barcley by Baloubet du Rouet or the celebrated stallion competition test winner and state champion, Catch by Colman, Diamar by Diarado or Million Dollar by Plot Blue have been able to convince the selection panel due to their foals’ quality. But also clients more partial to stallions successful on the international sport scene are being catered to, in view of sire names like Herald, For Pleasure HAN, Livello, Q-Verdi or Zirocco Blue.
Casall, Van Gogh & Co
At Elmshorn, 49 filly and colt foals from the breeding districts Bordesholm, Dithmarschen, Pinneberg, Plön, Rendsburg-Eckernförde, Segeberg, Steinburg, Stormarn-Lauenburg and the extended breeding area outside Schleswig-Holstein have met the panel’s rigorous selection criteria. The catalogue lists a great variety of bloodlines here as well, with a wide range of sires represented by a foal in the auction, from B like Balou du Rouet to V like Van Gogh. Quite naturally, the focus is on the name Casall, at Elmshorn as well, with the Caretino son represented by seven offspring. International sires represented at the Holsteiner foal auction include Nabab de Reve son Caremba de Muze – known as Glock’s London – winner of individual silver under Gerco Schröder at the London Olympics and the lively stallion Quickly de Kreisker by Diamant de Semilly. Two of the auction foals accepted to Elmshorn are by I’m special de Muze, a stallion whose sire Emerald is currently causing a splash on the international jumping scene under Harrie Smolders.
The dams of success
A good foal, however, comes from a good dam – one of the secrets behind the Holsteiner success. Because of this the selection panel has – yet again - paid particular attention to the mare families of the selected foals. They are among the very best the Holsteiner breeding programme, maybe even international horse breeding, has to offer. Behrendorf for example will see a half sister to success horse Carella, the winner of the Stuttgart World Cup jumping competition (Niklas Krieg) enter the auction ring; or a foal out of a full sister to Champion stallion Canto as well as a foal out of a full sister to Caldato (Hugo Simon). The Elmshorn auction candidates are no less interesting: the foal out of a full sister to L.B. Convall (Philipp Weishaupt) is definitely as interesting as the young half brother to Crocusant, a stallion awarded premium status at the 2013 licensing, or another foal out of a half sister to the stallion Chambertin.
